Receptive language and autism?

Anonymous
20 month old has receptive language delay diagnosis. Says 1-2 words but does not relate the words to the actual thing. Doesn’t follow directions. Starting speech therapy soon. Any idea if this is definitely autism?

Your child might just have hearing issues - have they been ruled out?

A receptive delay does not automatically indicate autism.

But it can be a marker, especially when combined with other traits. Talk to your pediatrician about an ADOS or M-CHAT evaluation if you're concerned about autism.

It’s impossible to say. Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

How did they do on the M-CHAT screen?

If you have any concern contact early intervention (PIE) program in Arlington. They can do a whole eval!

You can do the m-chat screening yourself online. Just Google it.
