All the reasons you are frustrated by, or dislike ACPS

To balance the other thread:

(1) Administrative and School Board leadership that seems focused on many issues other than academic instruction

(2) Administrative and School Board leadership that do everything to explain away objective data on poor academic performance

(3) Administration that is openly disdainful of parent concerns, especially when parents inquire about whether their children are mastering necessary material

(4) Administration and School Board leadership that hides safety issues and does not address the weaknesses with ACPS security

(5) Specialized instruction and administration trying to avoid providing a free and appropriate education to students with special needs (especially dyslexic students)

(6) failure to focus on providing evidence based instructio

(7) the overall struggles for students who are non-white, affluent, and neurotypical

The holiday and teacher workdays, etc this fall are truly out of control. (But we are happy otherwise)

On 7 - I mean a disproportionate number of students who are non-white, not- neurotypical, and/or non affluent often struggle

I'm not a fan of the front office woman at my child's elementary school who has major uncalled attitude.

The complete lack of transparency, the lies about money that will lead to a massive fiscal tragedy for the City, and the strategic plan that has nothing to do with educating children. The one and only HS will lose accreditation next year and no one seems to care. No one.

The one and only high school makes no sense. Why can't there be two or three. Take the minnie Howard campus and make it it's own stand alone high school. That would make much more sense.

LCTA? The registrar there has major attitude and is downright rude. I was hoping the former registrar would return this year. It’s a shame that the registrar is the liaison between the school and the parents. She should not be in a public-facing job.

No, I'm talking about a different school, but honestly how you're describing it is exactly the same. It sounds like the same person.

My feelings are hurt because I’m left out of the secret moms clique.

Jk. I’m not an ACPS parent but dang if there aren’t a lot of people complaining instead of finding something productive to better the schools.

I have another one based on this comment - how because of the entrenched leadership (and the community’s fawning over it) it is impossible to do anything to improve ACPS meaningfully. Said as a former ACPS parent / current Alexandria resident

3 is because of people like you.

But please tell me more about the “struggles” of affluent and normal (don’t use terms like “neurotypical” — it’s stupid) children?

Clearly, you are not an ACPS parent. There was just a parent on one of the facebook pages claiming parents should not be able to eat lunch with their kids (like before COVID) because it’s inequitable. There is no desire to change or improve. It’s a race to the bottom, but as long as the central office can employ hundreds of people and the SB can rub elbows with their ALX Dem buddies, all will be ok.

I said that 7 was a typo. I meant non affluent, non white, and non- neurotypical as struggling. As a parent of special needs (non neurotypical) child, go to fracking hell with your comment.

Run for a position on the school board. Everyone complains but no one is willing to run for office.

But as noted on some of the other ACPS threads, the same type of people who fawn over ACPS seem to always win the school board positions. The same cycle has been happening for years and there is no sign it can be broken.
