Demographics of GT Center classes?

Anonymous
Does anyone know if FCPS has data on the demographic makeup of AAP center classes? I know the schools show overall numbers and percent, but I'm wondering if there is specific data for the Advanced classes specifically in elementary schools.

Doubtful. It's hard enough to get a number of student count in each of the Center classes, never mind demographics.

I don't have any data, but I can tell you that my dd's GT center class is just as diverse as you would expect any typical class in Northern VA to be. There is no majority and no minority...but rather a good mix of different ethnicities.

Thanks - I figured there would be no hard data but thought I'd ask. Specifically looking for ethnically-diverse GT classes for my non-caucasian DS. Hope to not get any flames, just want to help ensure he is not totally the "odd kid out" in elementary school.

Our GT center has very diverse classes, way more so than our local elementary. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised - they reflect the diversity of No. Virginia quite nicely.

Where in Fairfax County are you? I have never seen anywhere in Fairfax County where a non-caucasian is "the odd kid out." Just look at the demographics of the school that you are thinking about. I'm sure the GT class won't be too different from those demographics. And if they are, it's often leaning toward more Asian kids so I don't think you'll have a problem.

Great Falls?

OP - I am thinking about Keene Mill Elementary.

Well, here are the demographics for Keene Mill. In the 2008/2009 school year, the school was:

40% white
21% Hispanic
6% black
23% Asian
10% other

I don't think there's a chance that your child will be the only non-white child in his class.

Wow! Your child is going from Great Falls all the way to Keen Mill. How long of a bus ride will that be?? Aren't there centers closer to your school in GF?

OP - I think "Great Falls" was in response to the assertion that all GT centers would be very diverse. I think the "Great Falls" poster was asserting that some, such as those in the Great Falls area might not be very ethnically diverse. I hope this makes sense.
