If you're in the wrong lane, KEEP GOING

Anonymous
This morning, someone got stuck in a left turn lane. They meant to go straight. So instead of turning left on the green left arrow, they sat there, blocked everyone behind them, and waited until the adjacent (straight) lane was clear.

I do not understand how people do these things. If you ended up in the wrong lane, just keep going with the road pattern you're in. Don't F things up for everyone else. Yes, you'll have to turn around. Yes, it may take you more time. That's your error. You'll learn from it.

Holding everyone else up because you messed up, is mind boggling. I see this so often, but during morning rush hour... I just don't understand the insane selfishness some people have.

I just lay on the horn until they move. 99.9% of the time they move

People are absolutely bonkers here. There is a twitter account that regularly posts clips of people turning *perpendicular to 5 lanes of traffic* to get over to their turn lane on 395.

It's called defensive driving. Not everyone in DC is from DC.

I don't think you know what that term means. Or are you trolling?

The term is dangerous driving. Is that what you meant?

Lol, you don’t know what defensive driving is.

There’s just this pervasive attitude among drivers here that their needs and desires should be prioritized over everyone else’s. As long as they’re not inconvenienced at all, they don’t care that someone behind them will have to sit through another whole cycle at that traffic light because they stopped traffic.

I just had this conversation with my kids. If you make a mistake just roll with it and your gps will get you back on track soon enough. Don’t come to a dead stop on a highway or try to cross three lanes to get to an exit. Just keep going and you’ll get where you’re going eventually.

I agree and I lay on the horn until they keep going.

OP here. I laid on my horn. As did other people. All they did was turn their right turn signal on.

I'm baffled. Where on earth do people who do this, learn how to drive?!

It’s not that they weren’t taught how to drive. They just don’t care about anyone else on the road.

Well pp above who thinks blocking a lane of traffic is "defensive driving" clearly indicates that some people either never learned how to drive, or learned how to in some backwards upside down universe.

Me too! I try to keep a narrative going about what I'm doing and why for the sake of my 14 year old who will be driving before I know it and we just had this specific conversation yesterday. It really is one of the most dangerous and selfish things I see on a regular basis.

I also have a running list of the trouble spots I keep intending to contact VDOT about, because for example when you see the same lane marker sign getting that many people in trouble over and over, it's a signage issue (although people are selfish too, see above)

They don't GAF about others. You can wait on them.
Normal people would inconvenience themselves, go through the "wrong" light, and reroute, just to allow those behind them to go on their merry way.

np So laying on your horn did nothing. Why did you continue to do something that wasn't working?

I see that type of thing a lot in my commute in Maryland. It is dangerous and extremely selfish of people. Ive seen people stop in the middle of the 270 split and back up to try to go in direction they need to go. I get that some might be out of town but go to the next exit, stop and figure it out instead of endangering lives!
