Chapter books for parents to read to 1st grader

Anonymous
Here’s what we’ve read recently. We need new suggestions!

Charlottes Web
Charlie and Chocolate Factory
Dragon Masters
Dragon Girls (kid was super into these. I found them repetitive, but she loved them)
Magic Treehouse
James and Giant Peach (weirder than I recalled)
Ralf and motorcycle series (loved these)

What should read next? Anything your kid has loved?

Check out Kate DiCamillo -- lots of good options and I found many of them pleasurable to read as an adult too. Also lots of female protagonists which is great for girls.

If she's into Dragons, My Father's Dragon is a classic and a quick read. Also the language is basic enough that you could take turns reading it if she is ready to read at the sentence or paragraph level.

DH is currently reading her My Side of the Mountain and she's enjoying it.

I'm following for more ideas as well.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
Princess Tales by Gail Carson Levine
Flat Stanley
Pippi Longstocking
Beverly Cleary
Just-So Stories by Kipling

Not a chapter book, but the Quiltmaker’s Gift by Jeff Brumbeau has significantly more text than an average picture book and the illustrations are gorgeous.

The Penderwicks is a family favorite.

My 1st grader has liked My Father’s Dragon (I think there are 3 books) and the Zoey and Sassafras series.

I think the Boxcar Children series is great for that age. I meant to list it with my suggestions (14:22), but then forgot it.

Unicorn Academy series (since she liked Dragon Girls) and maybe the Mia mayhem books? These were the first my kid read to herself but I think they’d be good read allowed.
