| At what point in time is an SAT prep course recommended? Is spring of 11th grade a good target? And any recommendations? I know Montgomery College offers test prep. I'm sure Kaplan, etc. as well. |
| Our kids did it during the summer between 10th and 11th grade, taking the tests (ACT/SAT) in Aug/Sept of junior year. This allowed them tons of time if they needed to retest (one took it a 2nd time, the other was one and done), and allowed them to concentrate on school and not testing during their junior year in HS (heavy AP schedule for both) |
Agreed! I think waiting until spring junior year is cutting it close in case your child needs to retake to get a higher score. When I was taking the exam, most students took it between 10th and 11th or fall semester of junior year at the latest. Most student I know took Kaplan and did well. Good luck to your student(s)! |
| Goodness. I knew none of this. I’m glad I asked. Sounds like we should plan on taking test in March with a course before that. When I looked at Kaplan, I couldn’t find a list of in person classes (and sat dates were outdated). They seem to be pushing online. Any experience with either? |
| A popular time is to study in January and February for an early spring or late winter test. Gives kid a chance to retake in late spring (not to mention summer, too). Capital Educators offers a class in MoCo. There are also classes by the big companies and private tutoring. We opted for private tutoring, which was similar in cost to the classes. |
| Did your DC take a mock ACT as well to compare? You want to make sure you’re studying for the correct test for you. |
Would you be willing to share the private tutor you used? |
We used Prep 1 on 1, which had competitive pricing. Tutoring works well for motivated kids who take practice tests on their own. |
