Best (protein) adds to smoothies - kids edition

Anonymous
So one DC has become pretty firmly vegetarian and so I’m trying to pack in more protein/ iron in breakfast smoothies—but the protein & fiber powder aisle is so overwhelming. Help! I would like something basically tasteless or pleasant (for a kids limited palate)! Any recs? I do use Greek yogurt already and DCs will tolerate a small amount of silken tofu but otherwise I haven’t had much luck with high-protein adds!

My kids drink Evolve protein shakes (I split one between the two of them and add a shot of heavy cream for extra healthy fats but you could skip that). Also Orgain plant-based or Ripple protein shakes. They don't like the OWYN ones.

Hard boiled egg whites, raw cashew nuts, sunflower seeds

Qwest protein always has a pleasing taste to me. Just a basic vanilla will do.

Nut butter

I think protein powders are unregulated and independent testing found high heavy metals in many brands. I would avoid, especially for kids.

Egg whites? The boxed kind off already separated egg white are pasteurized and don’t need to be cooked. Costco has pack of 6 cartons for maybe $7. In a smoothie I think they would be undetectable.

Peanut or almond butter.

Maybe others aren't as bothered by viscousness as I am, but that does not sound good at all to me.

I add lactose-free yogurt to my kids' smoothies.

Vega protein powder is pretty good imo.

I often add raw cashews and ground chia seeds, but avoid protein powders.

Also, almond butter is a good add-in. As is soy milk. Soy milk + orange juice makes most any smoothie taste like a creamsicle.
