What Jewish holiday is it today? WHat were people carrying on the way to temple?

I drive Seven Locks as it goes from Bethesda to Potomac to Rockville. Lots of people walking to temple carrying long plastic envelopes with plants (maybe?) inside. Please elucidate. Thanks.

Why can’t you google it, instead of demanding Jewish people do labor for you on one of their high holidays?

While low-key insulting them and their religious practices, might I add.

Are they decorating for Sukkot? Maybe they were bringing decorations for the sukkah.

Lulavs (and etrogs/citrons) for the sukkot holiday. As part of the holiday, there is a special choreography/march during the morning services.

Why do you assume no non-Jewish people are capable of answering said question?

Today is the first day of the week-long holiday of Sukkot. They were carrying a lulav and etrog (consisting of a palm branch, willow, myrtle, and an etrog, which is a not-tasty citrus). At a couple of points during the service, they shake the lulav and etrog and march around with it. Tomorrow is the second day of Sukkot, so you will likely see the same thing again tomorrow, since the first two days of the holiday are supposed to be celebrated in synagogue.

On these days and for the rest of the week, people will also eat and maybe sleep in a sukkah (a temporary hut) in their yards to symbolize the temporary dwellings of the Israelites as they wandered the desert.

Lol. Aren’t you exhausted from being you?

This is so ridiculous and why people are afraid to ask questions. No one is demanding “labor” of anyone.

OP, your question is fine. It’s good to learn about other cultures. Ignore the harpies

Yes but the answer could easily be found on a google search. It's just OP's laziness.

But it is much nicer when a pleasant person comes on and not only replies with facts, but shares personal experiences, meanings, or side details. That’s PP for your explanation of Sukkot. Way better than Wikipedia!

I once asked a friend what a religious procession in my neighborhood was and ended up converting to that religion. Questions are good, answers from generous people with the knowledge to answer are welcome.

Thanks to PP 16:15 for a clear and compendious explanation.

What a ridiculous post. Don’t assume victimhood is a necessary lens.

Word salad: reading is fundamental…even on Google.

It’s better that way.
