Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Is your school celebrating Halloween this year? Costume parade, class parties, anything? Received notice our school intends not to celebrate Halloween and instead do a "Fall Festival" in early November. Wondering where this is coming from as anecdotally hearing that some MCPS elementaries still intend on a traditional celebration...
Same here. On previous Halloweens over a third of kids opted out of activities, with many staying home that day. They nixed Halloween activities to be more inclusive and encourage attendance.

Ours is still happening - it’s called Fall Festival but it’s a costume parade followed by classroom parties with candy/pumpkins, so it’s Halloween.
There are activities for kids who opt out. |
Nope, ours got rid of it last year.
OP: Would anyone be willing to share why kids opt out? Is it cost of costume attire, religious opposition or just disinterest? Seriously never heard pushback before this year's cancellation so wanting to understand more. Thanks!

MCPS had cancelled Halloween in schools to appease religious fanatics of various backgrounds.

Our school in eastern moco does a trunk or treat arranged by the pta after school. It’s usually the Friday before Halloween itself. I’m fine with this.
I’m the above PP. I’m told they used to do it. But the kids who aren’t allowed to had to go to the gym for a separate activity. The teachers in charge of these kids tried to get parents to send in snacks and volunteer to come in and do stuff that was non Halloween related but it was a struggle to get stuff sent in and volunteers so they gave up. Stopped doing Halloween activities altogether and now do it after school instead.
Read the huge thread pp linked to. No need to rehash pages and pages of dialogue.
It's all MCPS schools. It's a religious school district now.
