Md seal of Biliteracy

What qualifies for getting a md seal of Biliteracy. Anyone out there whose child received this
Honor and how they did it? Thanks in advance.

They just have to take several years' of world language classes, and then get a high enough score on one of several language exams:

They can either score 4+ in any AP non-English language, or pass the annual evaluation test.

NP here.is it considered a big deal or just another box to check off?

I don’t think it’s a big deal given it’s so easy to have. Maybe on the NHS level.

There are also score thresholds for the Standard- and Higher-Level IB exams that will qualify. I don’t remember the exact scores, but you need a very high score on the standard level, but can get a slightly lower score on the higher level exam and still qualify.

My kid got it because of her score on the AP exam. She LOVED the medal that they gave her to wear at graduation. Fast forward a year and a half and she has basically forgotten all of her language.

(I don't think it has many advantages except for the medal!) I would be nice to have a line on the resume... but I think she has since taken it off for fear that an interviewer/employer might try to speak with her in the language!

lol. unfortunately this tends to happen with languages we crammed for in HS, or probably with many things we've had to cram for. really we need an overhaul of our education system. too many fall through the cracks from ineffective curriculum, too much testing (state, national, district: only the national testing should suffice), too much emphasis on cramming, the list goes on.

Does ASL count? Seems like it would be hard to administer given no AP exam currently exists.

Considering that out of 10,000+ seniors in 2017, 1,100 earned the seal and out of that number in 2022, about 1,500 earned it, I hardly think it's "easy to have."

My DD strongly feels that it gave her the edge for college applications. The AO she interviewed with was native to that country and was thrilled that my DD, with no real connection to the country, spoke it as well as she did.
Her BF was from that country and that pushed her to taking weekend classes.
Her grades and SAT were good but not mind blowing. Princeton.

Yes. They need to score 3+ on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview

If they take the AP class senior year and won't have the AP score result until after graduation, then does that mean they wouldn't get the seal of biliteracy at graduation?
