DCC school choice — Is it s waste to rank Blair #1 if we’re not zoned for Blair?

Anonymous
I mean, Blair is awesome and DC would really love to go there. But as I understand it, lots of other kids feel the same way. Are the odds of getting in to Blair through the lottery so low that it makes more sense to list DC’s second choice (Wheaton) as #1? This would also mean listing DC’s third choice, our home school (Einstein), as #2, thus guaranteeing a place at Einstein if DC isn’t selected for Wheaton. DC would prefer this over getting randomly placed at one of the other schools, or whatever they do with kids who can’t get their first or second choice.

TIA for any advice.

All of my DD's friends who chose Blair got it this year (we are zoned for Einstein). Einstein and Wheaton have grown in popularity over the last few years.

Really? And they are all zoned for Einstein?
I doubt it.

Given that Blair is always over enrolled this seems hard to believe

Newbie question: If your home school is Einstein, aren’t you guaranteed a spot there?

Only if you rank it 1st

Now all of them are over-enrolled except Kennedy.

If your child lists a non homeschool as number 1, gets their first pick, but ultimately decides the home school (listed as number 2) is the best fit because their friends are going there. Is the home school still an option? Zoned for Einstein and trying to gauge potential risk of not having it as an option if this scenario happens.

It's probably a waste of your first choice. The school is so overcrowded the odds are very slim.

Only if you rank it 1st

guaranteed if you rank it first or second

Are you sure? I thought you had to rank it first.

If you rank your home school first, you're guaranteed your home school. If you rank another school first and your home school second, you're guaranteed either your first or second choice. If you rank your home school third or lower, there is no guarantee.

I am zoned for Einstein and both my girls are going to Blair. If you don't get in initially, there is an appeal process and many folks get in on appeal.

Yes, my point is that we (and they) are all zoned for Einstein and overwhelmingly the high achieving kids from our circle wanted Einstein. A few applied to Wheaton and Blair programs and of the ones who applied, they all got in.

You are implying that everyone wants to go to Blair but that's just not old news and not true anymore.

My Blair-zoned kid chose Einstein, and is extremely happy they did.
