Rhabdo

Anonymous
I ended up getting rhabdo after breaking my hand this summer, and finally making it to Crossift. I killed my arms the first week, and was diagnosed with rhabdo. Now I am scared to go back to the gym. Anyone else out there that has overcome this fear? I could have died.

I'm sorry to hear that. Glad you are ok. Just stay away from CrossFit. It's trash anyway.

What is the connection between breaking your hand and rhabdo?

Anyway - I suggest getting an experienced trainer. I don’t think a trainer would give you rhabdo.

I had not used my arms all summer, and went back to lifting and push-ups like before my break, which was a mistake.

Yes- if it happens once it can happen again. You might be genetically predisposed.

Did you go all in and over push yourself?

If you did these exercise before without issue then you can probably do them again. just slowly work back up vs going all in the first week .

Yes, I did. I pushed myself like I did before I broke my hand. I should have eased back into it.

I have never had an issue before, and I have been an athlete my whole life. I am turning 50 next year.

Thank you for your feedback.

Did the doctor tell you how to exercise following it? I follow a trainer on IG who had rhabdo, also doing CrossFit. You can still exercise but you need to be careful. I would have this conversation with your doctor that will ease your anxiety.

Haven’t had it personally but am very familiar with it.

You need to be drinking a lot of water before, during, after workouts and you can’t exert yourself to the max anymore.

Ex-crossfitter here. It isn't a good program for older bodies. The risks and injuries will get worse if you over-push your body. I hated slowing down, but I'm not 40 anymore.

Just looked up Rhabdo and it sounds really painful. Sorry, OP. What does your doctor suggest? Go easy on yourself.

Aside for being painful..

It can cause kidney failure or permanent damage. Don’t push it OP

I think it’s a signal that you don’t need to be going that hard. Exercise but don’t go crazy.

And death if the kidneys shut down. Pretty scary.

Was it a crushed hand? That could cause rhabdo.
