| Can anyone steer me to info on the at-large candidates? I know Bonds and Silverman are the front runners, but does McDuffie or anyone else have a chance? How can I find out what their positions are on crime, housing and other issues? |
| go to each of their websites. reach out to each of the candidates....they are all approachable. |
| If you are sick of the rising crime in the District, then vote Bonds and McDuffie and get rid of Silverman. So sick of the progressive bloc policies that are making the city increasingly unliveable. |
|
Silverman is the sponsor and main proponent of the most significant family-friendly legislation in recent DC history, Paid Family Leave. Not only was her original legislation successful, but the program had a surplus of funds and has just been expanded and the payroll tax that supported it has been cut:
Because of Silverman's support for this legislation, she has been repeatedly opposed by Mayor Bowser and the business community. McDuffie, in contrast, doesn't even mention Paid Family Leave on his website. DC is a leader within the US in providing paid family leave and we have Silverman to thank for that. |
| I can see why the business community wasn't thrilled--an additional .62 percent payroll tax is a lot. (And I'm happy to see it's been reduced.) |

Silverman has become increasingly problematic to me. She faces an investigation over her meddling in the Ward 3 primary:
https://dcist.com/story/22/08/26/dc-elissa-silverman-ward3-poll-campaign-finance/ Multiple Black people are accusing her of some very gross behavior: https://twitter.com/AllysnCarpenter/status/1575632683975442432?t=8XjXk4AkHt8irReTow4ipg&s=19 https://twitter.com/mysikix/status/1575518411916017666?t=lN7qcRFyJ814U_ebpuwxVA&s=19 https://twitter.com/LindseyJonesR/status/1575562280598908928?t=Ou3aYDVhVyAeMYiGF6T3pw&s=19 |
I AM sick of rising violent crime and feel the council has drifted too far to the left, especially on that issue. I will be voting for McDuffie (and Bonds). |
Yeah, that's criticism from the left. I agree with those critiques, but find McDuffie and Bonds even worse options. So who is left? I'll probably throw my vote to whoever seems like a genuinely good person. Or maybe I'll hold my nose and vote Silverman to keep a liberal vote on the council. |
She sounds like a pretty terrible person. There are too many accounts that tell the same story: arrogant, condescending, and plays the victim card accusing others of anti-Semitism. This kind of stuff to me is disqualifying for an elected official. |
I have known Elissa Silverman since 2007 when she was a Washington Post reporter and have followed her career closely. I have both opposed her candidacies and supported them. I support her now. In all of those years, I never heard a single allegation that she behaved in the manner described in those tweets. I'm not saying those tweets are false, but that maybe we should hear her side of the story. Silverman has been the victim of anti-Semitic attacks. She was called a "fake Jew" by a speaker at a rally held by supporters of Council Member Trayon White. The megaphone was actually being held by one of Mayor Bowser's closest supporters: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/at-a-rally-to-end-divisive-politics-in-dc-a-speaker-called-a-lawmaker-a-fake-jew/2018/04/27/e3c0b182-4a34-11e8-827e-190efaf1f1ee_story.html Silverman reacted to that and other incidents with grace. When White earlier claimed that Jews controlled the weather, Silverman reached out to him and encouraged him to meet with Jewish groups. The two Council Members later attended a Seder together. I'm sure there are troubling personal anecdotes about all of the candidates -- whether true, false, or exaggerated. But, if you look at performance on the Council, Silverman has an enviable record. She has taken an extremely serious approach to oversight on her committees and has important legislative victories. Her effectiveness has ruffled some feathers, but DC needs some feather ruffling so she has my full support. |
|
Silverman. She's actually competent. And, frankly, the anti-Semitism coming from Ward 8 is scary AF.
I'm open to voting for someone other than Bonds. She doesn't excite me. |
| As a Ward 5 resident, I can tell you McDuffie is not it. Anyone else. |
I had a personal interaction with her once about 5 years ago. It was small potatoes, but I totally believe the condescending attitude. She's like a right-wing charicature of smarmy liberal who talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. If I vote for her I'll be holding my nose. |
