DCC question - odds for out of bounds middle school kids?

Anonymous
Curious if anyone here can share experiences. My oldest is an out of bounds kid at one of the MSMC schools and is interested in going to a DCC school for high school. I know that they are eligible in the second round after in bounds kids make their picks, but does anyone know how difficult it is for the out of bounds kids to get a spot? I'm hoping to manage expectations in our house.

Which DCC school?

Slim, moving would help.

I think they'd be open to going to any of them - we are early on in the process. I am assuming that there are some that are much more popular than others.

Is it really a slim chance? The school is really hyping up the process, and the parent information hasn't mentioned anything about the number of out of bounds spots. This is why I'm trying to get a sense so I can help my kid be realistic.

You won’t get Blair - very few DCC kids who aren’t zoned there get a spot.

The Wheaton engineering program is popular too, and Northwood might be popular when it reopens in the improved building (and be less popular during the renovation).

I thought Blair might be a top choice for many. What about Wheaton for a kid who is interested in their global studies program? That's a good point about the renovations at Northwood, hadn't thought of that.

Probably easiest to get a spot at Kennedy since it's the only DCC school that isn't overcrowded.

Maybe if there are extra slots but all are overcrowded.

We know someone in this situation who got into Wheaton in the second round. Blair and Einstein would likely be most difficult but the others probably less so.

You're saying your out-of-bounds child is at Argyle, Loiderman or the other DCC lottery magnet?

They are guaranteed a spot somewhere in the DCC just like any other DCC student.
Unfortunately as they do not have a "base school" they effectively get last choice/whatever seats are left over in part of what MCPS calls Round 2. I don't know what high schools traditionally have space in Round 2 but my guess would be all of them with the exception of Blair because so many in-bounds Blair kids put Blair as their first choice.

"Students who reside outside the DCC, but attend a DCC middle school, may participate in the high school Choice process during Round 2. These students also are assured of attending a Consortium high school; however, they have no guarantee of admittance to a specific high school, because they do not reside within a base area of one of the high schools. Choice forms for DCC residents are processed in the first round, and Choice forms for out-of-Consortium students are processed in the second round of the student assignment process, after students residing in the Consortium have been provided with their high school assignments."

Separate from this lottery choice process they are also eligible for the application or criteria programs and I think they are considered for this in the same pool as the regular DCC residing students.

Yes, that’s my kid’s situation - they’re an out of bounds kid at Loiederman. This is so helpful, thanks!

There are some spots opening up at each school after the first round because some students will have accepted spots at magnet schools within or outside the DCC. So for example if a kid zoned for Blair who put Blair as #1 on their choice form and was therefore assigned there, but then got accepted to RMIB, then a spot at Blair opens up for the second round.

Very few slots. LMS is not worth it for the magnet program. Its not well run.

My kid has had a great experience at Loiederman - I’m sorry it wasn’t a good fit for your family.
