Spanish or Japanese @Blair HS?

Anonymous
DC is currently in honors Spanish 3 in 8th and so far has an A, but it’s been a struggle. This is a kid who up until now breezes every class with an A but also is willing to work. Although I think they can manage, Spanish is their most challenging class, and they’re in the magnet. My concern is whether they should continue with Spanish in HS. Our home school is Blair which offers Japanese. Japanese appeals to them; they love all things Japanese. Also, their main focus is STEM, not foreign lanauge. Does anyone have experience with Spanish and Japanese at Blair? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx!

Spanish 4 at Blair is much easier than Spanish 3 at TPMS. The latter is a particularly challenging class but they will be well prepared for future classes.

Given Spanish is the easiest language to learn and your kid is struggling, I would cast doubt on their ability to do well in one of the most challenging languages out there.

Check to make sure Japanese is offered every year. Sometimes if there is not enough interest they may not offer every language. I know there is one Spanish/French teacher who is poor. DD had him for French and was convinced he did not really speak the language. Maybe he is better for Spanish.

Yes, they have the Spanish 3 teacher from TPMS that teaches Spanish 3 as if it were Spanish 99.

DD had that same class a few years ago. If you manage to make it through that class, Spanish 4 at Blair will be a breeze.

Thanks! DC isn't opposed to hard work but mostly prefers to focus their efforts on STEM classes.

My child found the Blair Spanish classes very challenging and a ridiculous amount of work. In Spanish 4 the teacher would assign multiple big projects/assignments a week. This was the year they were virtual. The teacher also teaches 2 and 3 and assigns a similarly inappropriate amount of work in those classes.

How’s French at Blair?

This hits home because my 8th grader walked in the door today and said "I have good news and I have bad news: I got the highest grade at my table on the Spanish III test, but I got a 65%."

My child wasn’t able to go from Spanish 4 to AP Spanish. My kid is in Spanish 5 in 10th grade and so are his friends on the same language path. My kid doesn’t want to take AP Spanish Lit in 12th and plans to switch to Japanese or French 1.

My 7th greater in Spanish too got a similar grade this week. Apparently there were an additional 70 words they were being tested on the most kids were unaware of because of confusing instructions.
