Cost of building a garage

Anonymous
We would like to build a two car garage with a charging station. We live in DC. I am trying to get a sense of how much this will cost. I am also wondering if it will help with resale value. TIA.

Really depends on what kind of garage you want and how ready the site is. Custom design, finished space, and ADU / second floor prep (so you can add it later) all add to cost, as does regrading and replacing old concrete. EV charging is usually minor. We're looking at about $75k for a garage with EV charging ourselves, but it's more complex than an off-the-shelf build on a ready-to-go site.

We have great space in the back of yard. We were thinking about custom design. It would not be an ADU and single story (but I like the idea of having second floor prep done). We will need some regrading (just a few inches) and will have to replace concrete.

Just out of curiosity, how much would an off- the-shelf build cost?

150/sq ft

Thanks. Two contractors wouldn't give exact numbers but suggested we should plan for something around 75k, which seems high.

I’d be curious about the ADU. Especially with costs to plumbing (sewage system, water line, etc).

150 per SF for something entry level. If you want something with a nicer design, maybe a loft, more like 250+ per SF

$300,000

a 2-car garage if you genuinely have the space will help with resale value

OP, did you end up doing this? Interested in costs and prices and who you used.

OP have you looked into the cost of permissions & possible restrictions?

Hi, this is OP. Project is a bit stalled right now due to size restriction. In our case, DC restrictions mean we can only build a 450 sq foot garage, which isn't really big enough for two cars and bikes. We are going to work on getting permission but the process can take some time. I am not sure why this restriction exists, especially since lots of our neighbors build larger garages a few years ago.
