I know there is a previous thread on this topic...but it's two years old...any advice from someone who has had a baby in the past year or so? What did you register for that you find super useful and what could've you done without? I'm pregnant with my first and have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks! |
Must haves:
Bouncy or Swing Miracle Blanket and/or Halo Sak with Swaddle Receiving Blankets Burp Clothes Bibs Bottles/Nipples Pack and Play Stroller (we have a snap and go and a Bob Revolution) Car Seat Pump (if you plan on BF and going back to work) Crib Sheets Don't bother: Sterilizer Bottle Warmer |
This cannot be found in a store but NEEDS to be ordered online it's called the miracle blanket. Don't waste your time with other swaddle blankets on the registry, they don't work nearly as effectively as the baby straight jacket. It's a must have for sure i buy it for every first time mom. |
Yes it can! http://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=113161& |
moby wrap! |
could have done without a billion washcloths and baby towels...regular towels work fine and we just use our hands on the baby so no need for washcloths. |
i didn't use the boppy though i know a lot of people did. i used the 'my brest friend' pillow and found it really really helpful (despite the ridiculous name). i'd also recommend getting lansinoh breast pads if you are planning to breastfeed -- there are tons of different brands and ive tried them all and the lansinoh ones are great -- thin, and have a sticky back so they aren't always shifting around.
i used a baby k'tan carrier and loved it for a tiny infant. |
I used the Bobby all the time! I loved it so much, I went out and bought a second to have one on both floors. Register for at least 1 extra cover! |
Have you had your baby shower yet? I understand how it is. I wanted to buy all the stuff for the baby when I was 3 months pregnant in case I didn't get a baby shower and most of the stuff I needed for the baby was filled when I had 4 baby showers around 8 months pregnant. You would be very surprised (I was!) at how generous people are.
Bare Bones Must Haves: Infant Car Seat Stroller Frame (These are great because they're lightweight and you can attach the infant carseat to it. By the time your kid outgrows it you will have a clearer idea of what your preferences are for a stroller). Crib (or whatever you decide to for baby to sleep in) Stuff like clothes, blankets, burp cloths, diapers, bathroom, toiletries people will give as gifts. For bottles and formula don't go crazy buying a lot in case you plan to breastfeed. For pumps I'd wait till the baby is born to see if you plan to breastfeed. They rent out pumps. I was an exclusive pumper so I had the rented pump at home and a Medla Freestyle at work. I know I'm missing other stuff, but don't forget most important is love! Sounds cheesy but baby will not know if the nursery is not done or if you do not have the "right" bottle. As long as you can feed, change, and put them to sleep your newborn will be fine. Have you bought the Baby Bargains book? It was my go to guide for baby stuff and it was very practical and thorough. Also the baby care class at GWU had a good registry list. Also for mommy I'd get: Tylenol/or some other form of pain relief medicine Pads Doughnut stool softener Lots of people to help so she can rest too! |
Not quite 2 weeks in with #2, and here are my thoughts.
Not necessarily 'fun', but flat (NOT prefold) cloth diapers are indispensable - work great for burp cloths, leak catchers, etc. Depending on when you're due, the Aden & Anais muslin swaddle blankets are fantastic, especially for warm weather babies. Agree on the carrier for the infant age. Also LOVED our Ergo, though not until about 5 months. Snap 'N Go is great for the early months. Bouncy seat / swing / inclined device to hold baby (though you can also borrow from friends to determine which kind your child likes.) You can also consider registering for some things you will use as baby gets older: exersaucer, spoons / plates / larger bibs, tiny diner placemat, etc |
We did: High Chair Convertible Car Seat Bumpo |
Yes! The Miracle Blanket was indeed a lifesaver for us. Found ours at Buy Buy Baby. Enjoy! ![]() |
I would actually hold off on the miracle blanket - we were given several as gifts which we never used. DS hated the swaddle from day one - he fought it tooth and nail trying to get his hands free. We gave up on it after a couple of weeks and he was much happier and slept much better. |
You may want to get the Baby Bargains book by Denise Fields (I think that is the author). They tell you the bare minimum that you need and give you a registry list, and they rate things like cribs and car seats by safety/ease of use factors. Very helpful for first time parents. |
don't forget the bathtub. Get the Primo eurobath if you have room in your bathroom for it. |
