Private & Independent Schools
| I could really use some help in trying to identify impartial resources, or get some advice, about the private school scene in the DC area. I went to RPCS and would like to find a school with a similar feel for DD, but it's so hard to tell what schools provide that. I know that there have to be other moms (or dads, yes you Gilman boys) who know what I'm talking about and can give me some guidance. So please, tell me, where should I be looking? Specific location to us doesn't matter, as we will be moving in the next couple of years anyway. (Live in VA now, will prob. stay in VA, DH works in DC.) |
| What is RPCS? |
| If you don't know (like me), you probably can't help OP. |

Roland Park Country School, Bryn Mawr and Notre Dame Prep are all girls schools; McDonough is coed and the only boarding school. Gilman is an all boys school. All well-to-do Baltimore private schools.
I think it really depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to be in DC, or the burbs? Size? Single sex education? |
| If you want an all girls K-12 school like RPCS, look for the same in this area. I'm from Baltimore and have only lived in this area for a few yrs. I think the choices for K-12 all girls may be limited as most all girls schools seem to start in 3rd grade or 9th grade. Maybe Holton-Arms in 3rd grade or NCS. |
Maybe if you filled us in some more on the schools in Baltimore that you like, we could help you with the ones here in DC. I have lived in DC my entire life, but I know nothing of the Baltimore school scene. |
| For single-sex, try NCS, Holton Arms, or Georgetown Visitation, and see what you think. NCS affiliated with Cathedral and prob most academically rigorous; Holton is secular and close to NCS academically; Visitation is Catholic and the best athletically although the other two have good athletic programs too. Good co- Ed schools you might check out would be Potomac and St. Stephens St. Agnes. GDS is a co-Ed school very good but not like the Baltimore schools you describe. |

Schools are a bit different down here. Catholic schools are bigger here- Visitation is big for girls, G Prep for boys. I would say that Beauvior is a bit like Calvert- NCS like RPCS, St. Albans like Gilman. Maybe Landon like BL. Holton like Garrison. Sidwell is more liberal than anything in Bmore- same with Georgetown Day and Maret.
Not very familar with VA schools. |
| I'm from Balt. and totally agree with PP (however, I don't know what BL is). However, I'd include Baltimore Friends as a liberal comparison to Sidwell. |
| Does Gilman have a sister school? |
| Yes, Bryn Mawr. |
| RPCS and Bryn Mawr are both sister schools to Gilman. BL is Boys Latin. |
| So helpful, thanks. Also GDS very much like Baltimore Friends (where I went). |
| I think I'd compare GDS to Park before comparing it to Friends in Baltimore. |
