We really need to address the issues of competitive teacher pay, overcrowding, academics, and school safety. Who do you think on the school board will actually get things done?
I know who doesn't get anything done: Bailey, Greene. Greene is nice but she is lockstep with Hutchings and Alderton. Bailey is insufferable and I am ashamed to be a Democrat and all these other Ds elect him when he was terrible on city council. Who is going to actually get stuff done? |
For some it's been 9 months. For others its been much more than that. What have they accomplished on any of the issues you list?
The short answer to your question is no one. |
They don't have to get anything done. It's rare that they get any pushback so why would they do anything differently?
Their PTAC cronies will see to those two rogue PTA Presidents. |
I clicked on this thread to comment on who does not get anything done, but I see you already have that covered. I'm disgusted that Greene keeps getting reelected and that Bailey got elected at all. |
What the hell does this mean? |
Why do people run for school board if they don't want to improve the schools for everyone? It is sad that teachers make so much more in neighboring school districts and that some of our schools are provisionally accredited. I am not impressed with the interim superintendent. Her response to the two West End PTA presidents was not sufficient. |
What’s going on with PTA presidents on the West End? Lots of vague commentary here but I don’t know the specifics. |
You can watch the most recent meeting: https://www.acps.k12.va.us/school-board/watch-school-board-meetings/watch-live-school-board-meetings
But essentially, two PTA presidents made comments about overcrowding in the classrooms and asking the SB to take action. The classrooms are above the size limits even with the extension of additional students this year. Some schools are facing overcrowded classrooms with insufficient resources while other ACP$ schools have shut down classrooms and/or well below the stated limit. As a previous poster said (or may have been on another ACP$ thread), the SB doesn't like feeling pressured into creating action. |
For some it's a stepping stone to bigger things. Alderton and Greene clearly want to join Hutchings at his consulting firm. Booze running for reelection is part of a bigger campaign by the NEA to have their people on school boards (it's a total conflict of interest but its not like Alexandrians care about that kind of thing). I think Baird ran really wanting to improve the schools but she was sucked into "Greg" and the establishment in record time. She scrubbed her campaign website of anything about transparency or communication within a few months of taking office. Others here have posted that Ignacio is settling scores and just likes power. Reif is just weak - she said one or two things during the school closures but overall was/is a mouse. Elnoubi talked a good game when Hutchings tried to control SB members talking to the press (and by extension constituents) but he is still following Hutchings' directive. The interim superintendent (who will likely be the new superintendent) is Hutchings pick. Between that and this board that were all totally enamored of him - don't expect any change. |
Baird also has an equity consulting firm. |
10 years ago I attended a session at the Beatley library run by Justin Wilson (who back then was not yet mayor). The session was regarding the need for a new high school and went on to say that things are happening. So don't hold your breathe for any of the school board members to do anything dramatic or worthwhile. It is always a very slow, painful process.
If you want something done, as a parent or community member get some other people together and start pushing for it and being persistent. This is the way I have witnessed change happen. Basically once there is a lot of complaints the school board or even the city council decides ok this must be an issue that we should pay attention to and will try and do something. They both just kind of wait around for this to happen. |
Greene is nice but isn't very smart. During the election she did an interview where she decried the racist curriculum of ACPS. Yet...she's been on the school board for years and so bears a lot of responsibility for that racist curriculum. |
Yeah, you can't believe a word Wilson says. He was very pro adult housing on school grounds (to be fair so was Hutchings and the School Board - just watch some of the joint task for meetings before they were found out) until the plan was released. Then suddenly he had no idea where it came from. Then they blamed the GM principal. Then they blamed an errant contractor. Cindy Anderson the then school board chair claimed total amnesia but she never blinked an eye when housing on school grounds was discussed in the fall of 2019. Same with Veronica Nolan the vice chair. But the UMC wine moms keep voting for him (he likes to call them his mom mob/mafia) because they need him to rush their kitchen remodel permits. And they are weirdly enamored of local elected officials. It's so bizarre. |
And lives in a 1.2 million dollar home. LOL. |
I don’t care if Greene is nice or not. You highlight why she has no business on the school board. Greene has no sense of what is important. ACPS’ curriculum is racist only in that it is not evidence based / using the best practices approaches, etc. Greene has never shown a bit of interest in the approaches that ACPS uses to teach its students. ACPS has a challenging student population (in part because of the challenges created by systemic racism in society at large). But, ACPS first tool in trying to address should he doing everything it can to use the best instructional approaches possible. ACPS barely ever discussed that issue. |
