Is this Shan Chana Masala boxed spice mix bad for me?

Anonymous
A friend used to make chickpeas using this Shan Chana Masala mix. It was delicious and easy. Is this terrible for me?

Here is the list of ingredients:

cumin, black pepper, red chili, clove, brown cardamom, cinnamon, green cardamom, garlic, ginger, citric acid, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed soy protein, sugar, canola oil, leavening agent: sodium bicarbonate, silicon dioxide.

And here is the link to nutritional panel:

Is this extremely high in sodium?

Yes, it’s 50% of your daily sodium

Yeah it’s high in sodium, but when you use a serving of this to make chickpeas do you eat them all or does it make more than one serving of chickpeas? If so then fine. If not then cut back your sodium the rest of the day.

You will make a whole pot of chickpeas with 10 gms of chana masala. So, the quantity of sodium per serving is miniscule.

there are 10 servings in each packet, and each serving is 50% of your daily sodium.

If you go to the spice aisle in the Indian store, there are many other brands like Shan. Look at the labels. Some
Have sodium and some don’t. I just got MDH brand. Very little sodium and none of the silicon dioxide etc either.

hydrolyzed soy protein isn’t good for anyone,. It can also trigger migraines in many people. It is like MSG.
