What say you, DCUM? Full week off for Thanksgiving, or 2-week winter break?

Columbus Day or no Columbus Day? How about Veterans Day?

I want a longer winter break and would happily start school a few days earlier to get it.

We came from a district with a full week off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks of winter break, start dates around the same time as MCPS, and an earlier finish. However, that district had far more weeks with 5 full days of school, which does not appear to be on the table.

I said longer winter break and Columbus Day. I wish there was an option for a later start though.

I'd love a 2-week winter break.

I have two kids in MCPS and I also work in the district - whatever option they go with, I hope it has a few half days as possible.

This. Its such a waste and counts as instructional day.

Unfortunately, this was not included in the survey. I hate half days!! Also MCPS staff here. I should have checked school should close all week for Thanksgiving. I have a kid in PEP, and there is no school for when it’s half day. Then I have another kid who is leaving early. I get that week is used for parent teacher conference, but it’s so inconvenient for us!

And if you're going to do half days, make them late start, not early release!

As usual, they asked about things I don’t care about and didn’t ask about things I do care about. Every mcps survey is like this! I agree with you all, the half days are the worst, and I like the suggestion of the PP to make them late start! Instead of the week of Thanksgiving or a longer winter break, I’d rather have a full week Feb break during President’s Day.

You are so right about MCPS. I love that the kids are in school on Columbus Day while I have the day off!

I wish they had left a comment field for other suggestions. I would like to see MCPS shift it's calendar to more closely match the college semester system. Start sooner so that the semester ends before the winter break. Then it is easy to have a two week break. And with 2nd semester starting sooner, school can end at Memorial Day. Kids are just mentally done in June - it is wasted time. The earlier start give more productive learning time, plus gives students in AP/IB classes a few more weeks of instruction before tests in May, like so many other school systems across the country.

You could write an email that says this.

No Columbus or Veterans Day.
Keep Christmas and Thanksgiving as is.
If there was a place for suggestions - Give a holiday or two to Muslims or other groups who don't get any.

And no I'm not Muslim.

They’ve been putting stray professional development/makeup days to align with Chinese New Year and Eid recently.
