Just got home from our two week appointment and the ped noted a sacral dimple and has referred us for an ultrasound. Looking for reassuring stories, thank you!
If you had routine prenatal screening, the chances are like 99% that it’s nothing - what it could be would have been picked up in the screening. My child’s was nothing.

The data shows that if the dimple is within 1 inch of the anus, there is no problem and no need for imaging (but sometimes practitioners do it anyway, just to be thorough). If a citation would help, just ask and I will dig it up.
My training was that if it was between the buttocks cheeks, it's fine -- and that generally correlates with the research cutoff of distance from anus. |
My DD had the same thing. The attending ped in the hospital at her checkup referred us for an ultrasound for the sacral dimple. The ultrasound went well (she snoozed through the entire thing; it took about 1 hour) and no additional complications came up. She's now 3 and nothing's ever come up since.
DS had one (so do I). I recall DS having an extra check about it in the hospital, but otherwise has never come up.
DD had one. No tests, but she is perfectly normal.
Our firstborn has a very small one. Had imaging done, no issues.
I have one as does DD - she wasn’t even referred for an ultrasound.
My child has one and was sent for imaging. The doctor at the hospital was annoyed she had even been flagged. He said she has hair on her back because she’s part italian and that a sacral dimple is not a big deal.
My DD has one and in my large pediatric practice, one Dr. recommended an ultrasound and the other didn't. I went and got one and DD was totally fine. Slept through the ultrasound. The hardest part is waiting for the result (which they give you right at the scan).

Sacral ultrasounds were recommended for both my girls.
DD1 had y-shaped buttcrack line; normal ultrasound. (And disappeared as she grew bigger) DD2 has skin tag in that area; normal ultrasound (caught while still in postpartum unit) Ultimately These were genetic quirks for us. Wish you luck, and this is usually nothing! Better to rule out an issue early, and this procedure is easy to do on sleepy newborns who aren’t wiggling much yet. |
My oldest has this. They just need to ensure that the spinal column is fused. He’s 12 now and I haven’t thought about it since that appointment. Don’t worry!!!
I used to work postpartum—many had sacral dimple went to u/s majority were ok. I’m surprised missed in nursery during MD rounds |
Ours had one and the imaging showed nothing wrong associated with that, but found a completely separate (and serious) issue when we had the imaging done. I’m very glad we got the imaging done.
This is OP, thank you all! This was very reassuring.
