Hi! I have a weekend trip coming up in Manhattan for the weekend with my 5 year old. This will be a very different trip then when my husband and I have explored NYC child free. I would love recommendations for things to do and hotels to stay in that are kids friendly. |
Natural History Museum + outdoor play areas nearby. There's also a Children's museum = all on upper W.S
We stayed at the Lucerne, but I have a feeling it may have been made into a homeless shelter during Covid. |
Skip the Children's museum, it's definitely not worth it for a trip and it's a germ trap.
Yes to the Natural History Museum! Check out the discovery room there. The New York Hall of Science in Queens is terrific (but a bit far from Manhattan). I took my 5 year old to afternoon tea at the St. Regis and had a really nice time together. It could also be old enough for a show like Lion King or even a matinee in Lincoln Center. All the playgrounds in Central Park are wonderful, e.g. Hecksher, Safari (hippo) playground, Wild West Playground. |
FAO Schwartz
Ghostbusters building Top of the Rock Joe’s pizza in the west village Bubbies for brunch (near the ghostbuster building) Central Park playground Horse and carriage ride around Central Park Teach them how to hail a cab Teach them how to cover their ears when they are in said cab (you notice the cursing a lot more with kids) |

Central park zoo

These are great ideas. Thanks everyone! |
We brought our kids scooter with us and it was awesome for helping them get around town while we were walking. |
Desserts at serendipity or max brenner.
Museum of natural history. Museum of ice cream. Other good recommendations here as well. |
Metropolitan Museum of Art--many 5 year olds love the Egyptian temple.
Ferry Ride--Circle Line is excellent, but if it's too long pick one of the NY Ferry rides. https://www.ferry.nyc/ Of course you can also do the Staten Island ferry. |
Statue of Liberty
Art class at the Whitney Guggenheim Empire State Bldg observation deck Bryant Park winter village (December/January) NYC Children’s Theatre Story Pirates show |
Cooper Hewitt design museum is also great for that age. |
Transit museum and dumbo carousel, central park zoo, ny public library in Bryant park has the stuffed animals that inspired Winnie the Pooh. A kid who likes transportation and doesn't mind heights might like the Roosevelt island tram. Ellis island and the tenement museum both have kid focused tours. It really depends what your kid is into! |
Seaglass Carousel. Adults can go on as well. |
Plan out what you want to do and then eliminate two things and replace them with hanging out quietly in your hotel room. |
