I’m a single mom considering renting an apartment to send my child to Dorothy Hamm MS. Any sense of what the social scene would be like since we would be visibly less well off than many classmates? I am highly educated and have a great job - just dealing with being on my own, crazy high cost of living, yadda yadda. Seems like a great school but fitting in is important too. |
DHMS is a very diverse middle school. Families from all backgrounds. I wouldn’t worry. |
I’m sure there are tons of kids at hamm I’m those apartments. There are tons around old Dominion. I live in 22207, but if was on my owns with kids, I’d move to those apartments. Horizons are nice. |
+1 It didn’t seem to make much difference in friend groups for my kids. |
Single mom here. By middle school, I had no idea where my son’s friends lived. They were more likely to go to Starbucks after school or an activity at school than go to other people’s houses. You’re fine, and there are kids in all the buildings. |
I’d think you’d be fine . Hamm pulls firm Rosslyn, Courthouse and Clarendon. Plenty of those kids live in apartments. Not all are expensive apartments. |
Thanks everyone! Bonus question… anyone know about the Cherry Hill Apartments right by Safeway? |
Safe, quiet, family friendly. |
We lived at Cherry Hill during a renovation of our home. I loved it there. It is was really well managed and the apartments were great. It was fairly quiet. The common area amenities were really nice - gym(s), party rooms, offices, grill area etc. You also cannot underestimate the convenience of having the Safeway 50 steps from the front door. |
Thanks so much!!! |
I lived in the townhouses across from the Safeway for several years. I loved having that Safeway so close by. |
Your child will be fine. There are tons of apartments in that area and very few are what I would consider “high end.” I heard so many good things about Dorothy Hamm by the way. Good luck with your apartment search! |
