If the student's stats are in the median, is that a match or reach?

Stats are GPA and SAT.

School acceptance rate is between 30 to 40% depending on souces and how data is spliced (30% nationwide but 40% for high school, on ED)

Some people call that a "high target" or a "high match" meaning that for a more selective school being at the median with no other hooks makes your odds a little less than the odds of getting in overall. Also, important to distinguish--when you can--the acceptance rate and admissions profile for your particular kind of application (e.g., in-state vs. OOS for a public school; ED or RD) as these can vary a lot.

Median without a hook? Reach.

High Target.
It’s not a reach at that acceptance rate.
