Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

I know they are ranked pretty high. But do you know whether they have good after-school activities? How big are the classes (K-2)? Is it difficult to get into after-school care program?
Thank you. |
| anyone? |
| Bumping this because I have similar questions. I know the schools have a good reputation and are highly ranked, but are they friendly? test-oriented? pressure cookers? Do kids in elementary school have recess and outdoor activities? Is the small size an advantage in terms of the social environment? |
I really like these questions, PP -- I'm guessing I'd be pleased to have my kids go to school with yours! I'd add one more: How much homework is there, if any, in the first few years?
|
| 21:10, we are definitely on the same page -- I think the idea of homework in kindergarten is insane. I have heard the FCC school system described as "balanced" and would love to know more. I hope we will end up neighbors! |
| Small, warm, responsive, yes the kids play at recess and have outdoor activities, yes there is good aftercare (I believe it is for the asking for whoever wants it -- no wait lists). No homework in K with most teachers; the amount increases each grade. |
| OP here: yes, we moved finally to the City of Falls Church because of the schools. I love my son's school! |
That's great, OP! Can you offer some specifics with respect to the questions above (e.g., ten minutes of homework per grade year, two half-hour recesses per day, etc.)? Many thanks! |
My second grader does his homework only once a week (he is pretty busy with other activities during other days). It usually takes him about 30 minutes. I believe they have 1 recess, but 2 PE classes a week (it used to be 3 PE/week in the first grade). |
