There is no such thing as a “top doctor”

Bariatric surgeons do these procedures every day all day. As long as you aren’t getting it done in Mexico, any board certified bariatric trained surgeon in the US is fine and you will likely have same outcome with any

Has your friend explored semaglutides such as Ozempic or Wegovy?

It depends on the type of surgery she wants. Not all bariatric surgeons do all surgeries. She should get a consult with a few to talk about it.

Nothing wrong with getting it done in Mexico. They do it all day every day there too and you save $15k.

We had a great experience with Dr Fitzer in Reston.

+1. His office is great and he did a great job - just note that you only see him once before surgery, day of surgery and might not see him again. His NP does all the follow up in the hospital. He only appears again if there is a problem. Very quick recovery and I don’t even have scarring. Lost 75-80 pounds and normal weight now. Best decision I ever made.

Not all hospitals do all the surgeries either. I explored the option pre covid and they were clear that the hospital policy is that they don’t perform sleeve surgeries except in some specific cases (which he detailed briefly, but it was four years ago so I don’t remember).

Depending on your insurance, if you have complications from bariatric surgery in Mexico, they wont cover it the procedures to fix the complications.

OP here. She tried semaglitude and the new drugs. She couldn’t stop vomiting so they took her off. She lost some weight, but no here near enough. I know she will be paying out of pocket, not insurance coverage.

Any names you all recommend? She is about to start making calls. She is seeing a therapist to help her with that mental aspect, but she is intent on the sleeve. I admire her determination to change her lifestyle and get healthy. Her diabetes is barely controlled with meds.
