PSA: GBBO is back on!

We saw the first ep of the new season last night. Some good characters, and good bakes, this time! The person who deserved to be star baker was star baker, the person who deserved to leave the tent, left the tent.

And not that it matters but Matt seemed a bit toned down, which I appreciate. <3 Noel. Paul and Pru were in their usual fine form - I don't think either of them ages.

Watched episode #1 last night. This season has a great group of bakers. I’m really looking forward to it!

I'm half convinced he's a catfishing plant - how can he be this good looking, and a nanny, and an excellent baker?! And have an excellent personality, too?!

Rebs is so freaking hot, there is no way she goes home right away!

I love it.

Thank the gods it is back. I need this show. I agree that Matt has dialed back his antics. Still nothing will beat Marry B. and Mel and the other who I can't remember.

Do you ever try making their creations? I went nuts over bread sticks one year and could never get them flavorful. I've tried and failed at making a swiss roll 5 times. I made something that was edible the 6th time.

Is it like Top Chef in that the contestants keep getting more talented each season?

I do think the quality is particularly good this year -- you could tell in the technical which was not particularly difficult but the results universally looked good. Often there are a number of bakers who clearly know how to bake but are not very good at making their bakes look appealing because they are used to baking for a home crowd that is much less likely to care. I sense that this group might be more skilled at presentation across the board than in previous seasons, where there were often one or two standouts in this respect but also a number of people who were weak.

The thing about presentation with baking is that it's generally about a combination of giving sh*t, using the right tools, and taking your time. The first two are easy to screen for but the last is what throws so many people on GBBO because of the time crunch. It will be interesting to see if people continue to turn out good looking bakes moving forward because that could mean a group with good time management skills, which I personally prefer because I always feel that the drama derived from problems created by the tight timelines feels cheap. Take any skilled baker and give them 20 minutes less than they strictly need to make something, and they will also wind up giving you something looking runny, soft, cracked, or otherwise broken.

What they did to those avocados was a crime against food!
