I can walk any number of miles w/o issues but can barely bike one mile. My knees just lock up and refuse to bike any more. Doctor said I have the beginnings of arthritis. I am in my 46 and otherwise pretty health and have been just the right weight all my life.
It is what it is but I would love to bike with my kids and knees are killing me. Anything I can do? |
Physical therapy or surgery
Sometimes we just have to realize that it’s best to give up an activity. I assume weight isn’t an issue, since you didn’t mention it, but being overweight is very hard on knees. |
eat anti-inflammation food |
It could be the height of the bike seat. Make sure it is appropriately adjusted. |
Also look into syn visc if you actually have arthritis. |
Before you embark on any of the other recommendations here, have you invested in getting a professional bike fitting for your bike? In all likelihood, your bike settings are wrong.
I used John Hughes with 90+ cycling/ 90+ bike shop in Columbia. He came to my house. Was worth every penny. I was experiencing horrible hip pain and turned out my bike settings were completely off. After he worked with me and my bike, my hip pain went away. |
Definitely try PT. It was absolutely life changing for my Dad. |
Start with PT. I'm currently working with a PT on alignment and strengthening parts of my quads I didn't know I could access to get the knee to track straight when I bike. PTs are very, very good at this kind of thing.
+1 to a bike fitting, too, which will also be related to what kind of stress you put on your knees as you pedal. |
Try tumeric |
Metagenics SPMs are a great anti-inflammatory. I take 2 every day after a few days of 4-6 to start it all off. You can get them on Amazon but they are super expensive. |
Cortisone shot if PT doesn’t help. |
who says this shite? I have gallstones, and if I take too much turmeric in my food, I have an attack don't be an idiot |
+100 |
What that |
Whatever you do don’t do surgery. I was diagnosed with severe arthritis and the quack doc wanted to perform knee surgery on me. Fast forward 6 months and I’m squatting running and tennis with no pain and didn’t go under the knife |
