Crew for Middle Schooler in NOVA?

Anonymous
My middle schooler thinks he might like crew once he gets to HS. He would like to try it out first, maybe attend a rowing camp. I've looked around online but can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have a recommendation?

He did, I swear. My husband and I know zero about the sport. A friend at a party told him "you look like you'd be a good rower" and he started watching YouTube videos and now is all excited, so I'm literally googling to figure it out. Right now I'm gagging a bit at the cost. But we have pushed him to join a team sport, and this is the first thing he's expressed an interest in.

He can do Learn to Row -- it's usually for a week the summer before ninth grade. Haven't seen it earlier than that. It's normal to start crew with no experience.

Thomason’s in Georgetown has a Learn to Row program for middle schoolers. My DD doing and her friend from Arlington is too. Not sure if he can still join Fall session ( this was first week) but they’ll have in Spring & Summer too. It’s boys & girls

Arlington Public Schools allows eighth graders to row on the HS team because there's no rowing program at the middle schools.

My DC also participated in a summer program for middle schoolers run by the APS HS rowing team designed to introduce kids to the sport. It was relatively low cost and DC had fun.

Make sure he can tread water for 10 minutes. That will be part of the screening to be on the team

Lots of HS teams have learn to row programs in the fall. the one at Langley runs every Saturday for 8 weeks and is a great way for kids to decide if they want to join the team. Usually it is tons of 9th graders in the program.
