I want-- no, I NEED-- laser hair removal

Anonymous
My legs are a godawful mess. If I try to deal with the thick dark hair above my knees, I get bumps and ingrowns and razor burn that looks just as bad. I can't even begin to address my bikini line, the hair is so thick and coarse. I've tried the chemical depilatories, a men's electric shaver, and a high-end four-blade razor. It's all bad. I haven't even tried waxing. It would be like the scene from the 40 Year Old Virgin where Steve Carrel gets his chest waxed and goes home bleeding through his shirt.

So unless there's some miracle product that people are keeping to themselves, it's either laser hair removal or a burqini for me. http://www.ahiida.com/Burqini-Swimwear/

But how? We don't have a lot of extra money lying around, and there are a dozen home improvement projects on the list of things to do with spare cash. Are there any bargains to be had on lasers? Discounts at training institutes? New providers offering deep discounts? Anything?

Find a spa that does laser surgery. When DH/family asks what you want for your birthday/xmas/anniversary, etc, ask for a gift certificate to that particular spa. If a few people give you $50, then you should be able to get at least one session of legs or bikini. Packages tend to be pricey, so maybe just do a session at a time when you can save/splurge on it. Every time I did a session on my legs, it reduced hair by about 20% (I have fair skin and dark hair).

How much were you spending per session, do you recall?

i spent 500 for both legs (knee down only) at a doctors office. not sure how that compares to salon. i've been thinking for a while that i should shop around and look for something cheaper. have had it done it two or three times and there is significant improvement but i am not hairless yet. going slowly cause of cost. but laser hair removal has been a major life savor for me (had it done on face too)

Go to Reveal they are having amazing deals now and they will allow you to pretty much negotiate your payment plan. I financed for 0% over 18 months - they did charge a $25 financing fee so maybe not free exactly. Worth every red cent.

I've never tried it myself, but a friend who has had it done says you'll save more in the long run with a package. Among her many other talents, my friend Sara writes for the DC Health and Beauty Examiner (and she didn't pay me to say this or anything ) and here is a column she wrote about lasers:

I have a friend who did laser and said that it worked great until she got pregnant again and all the hair came back. So apparently hormones trump laser. Wait 'till after you are done having babies, if you arent done already, thats what I plan.

If you live in NoVA you might be interested in today's groupon deal- it is for 6 laser treatments for 119$ I'm pregnant, otherwise I think I would give it a try.

Yes, they tell you when you get it done that a hormonal change such as pregnancy could cause regrowth. I haven't noticed any additional growth since pregnancy, though.

Not the OP but has anyone had any scarring issues? Especially on face?

no scarring issues on face in my experience though i have had tiny temporary scabs. it was so worth it though cause it all cleared up fine and serious decrease in hair. i went to a nurse in a doctors office for my face though cause of anxiety about scarring etc. now that it has worked well and i am familiar with the laser used, i might try some place else (cheaper) for legs etc.

If you are at all prone to getting ingrown hairs, I would recommend doing your legs in winter. After each session I had tons of ingrown hairs, and scabs all over my legs from using tweezers to unlodge the ingrown hairs (they say to keep using moisterizer to minimize ingrown hairs, maybe I didn't use enough). So I had some pretty unsightly legs for a while, but no scarring. Don't know anyone else who had that problem, though.

the deal for today is over now, but they might have it come up again.

i agree - wait until the winter to do your legs. i had hair stuck in the follicles for a while (ingrown??) after. My legs looked horrible for at least a month (but then cleared)! Note: This did not happen with laser hair removal I had on my face - just some minimal scabs that went away a day or two later. In my experience, doing face on Friday, meant make up could cover any residual problems by Monday but legs were different for some reason.

pp here who recommends laser - i have advice regarding how to deal with your legs/bikini line in the mean time. i have a horrible time shaving too cause my hair is so thick/coarse. at the beginning of beach season, i let the hair grow long enough to wax at home (can't be too long or waxing won't work as well but can't be too short or the hair won't be pulled out). Then I get the sally hanson wax at home strips (big strips for bikini/legs with the sticky stuff already on the strips that you just warm up with friction from your hands - no separate heating required). I then self wax as much as I can. I can't do as well as going to a professional but waxing helps a lot cause it takes the hair much longer to come in and makes keeping up with shaving easier.

I only started doing this after I had had a professional waxing a couple times and figured out how it works. It might be worth splurging on the waxing job just to make things easier on yourself this time. And don't worry, those ladies who do the waxing have seen everything. It does hurt but is worth it in my experience.
