Minnesota or Wisconsin or Missouri? Family resorts for multigenerational trip next summer

Anonymous
Trying to plan a trip with three families plus grandparents next summer that is somewhere in the middle of the country. MN, WI, or MO maybe could be Iowa (Okoboji?) where we could rent some cabins and have stuff to do with kids ranging from 6-16. Any and all recommendations are welcome.

What do you all like to do- hike, fish, wineries, beach, boating, etc?

Big Cedar Lodge (MO)
or the Homestead (MI)

I don’t know anything about MN or IA. I loved the Abbey in Lake Geneva, WI when I was a kid. I’ve got no idea what it’s like now.

How about some place along the shores of Lake Michigan?

We stayed at a cottage on the grounds of this property and felt that it would be awesome to rent out the whole property for a multigenerational trip. It's within walking distance to the lake beach. https://www.elephantwalkresort.com/

Native Missourian, it is horrible there in the summer. Still and hot and humid. TBH, I'd recommend someplace in Idaho.

In Minnesota, I'd look at the triangle from Brainerd to Grand Rapids to Bemidji.

Door County, WI.

Maybe the Wisconsin Dells?

Why not Michigan? I found Door County to be underwhelming but everyone loves Michigan.

Check out North Star Lake Resort in MN.

Just reading this post I feel the mosquitoes biting and the intense oppressive Midwest heat.

Go to Lake Wisconsin and rent a big house. You'll be 20 mins from Madison, 20 mins from the Dells, near lots of charming small towns. You can go to Glockenspiel it's this cheesy German town, Wollersheim Winery/Distillery, New Glarus Brewery, Devils Lake for hiking, Circus World Museum in Baraboo (home/start of the Ringling Bros). All of that is within an hour drive.

I wouldn't go to the Dells. It is waterparks, go karting, mini golf, seedy motels, fudge/tshirt shops. Kinda Ocean City vibes. Not that that can't be fun sometimes, but doesn't seem like what you are looking for.

Yes on Lake Wisconsin. Look at Saugatuck Michigan, Torch Lake MI, Door County WI, Vilas County, WI. Maybe Lake Geneva (crowded!). Grand Marais, MN.

Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri is really beautiful and fun.
