Some of them will. Many will instead be watching younger siblings, catching up on missing assignments, helping Grandma around the house, working, napping, writing their college essay, cleaning the house, and mindlessly consuming media.

What is the purpose of the early release day?

This is what my kids will be doing, unfortunately.

Some of them are for professional development, some are for interim grading, the one in November are for parent-teacher conferences.

I am a teacher and we have no idea why - nothing is posted on the school calendar explaining why.

Thank you for the heads-up, OP!

Many years ago, I hadn't checked the early release times, and apparently missed an email, and the school had to call me to pick-up my son.

My HS kid was invited to a big pool party on Wed. It is 81 and sunny. A ton other kids waking to Mall nearby. Those days sadly suck for some. Are a lot of fun others.

The pool party may be a dumpster fire or great. It was organized by mom and fully catered. Last year my daughter went to one on this same half day in some big mansion. A bunch of parents drive. Was fully catered and parents attended indoor catered party overlooking pool from second floor. They also hired a lifeguard

BoOE started adding a couple extra early release days last year to give teachers a couple more hours to catch up on things. I’m in HS and I’m really happy for the two hours because I’ve had a high number of schedule changes last week and this week (~25 dropped and 30 added) and I have to sort out important stuff the new kids missed and make new seating charts. I doesn’t seem like much time, but every little bit helps.

I’m grateful for the early release day to catch up on grading and also to update canvas.
I’m a teacher. I also am always trying to improve my lessons so a little bit of extra time here and there is much appreciated
