From Chancellor Rhee's role model/hero.
The comments are interesting. http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-05-24/our-antiquated-school-rules/?cid=hp:originalslist2 |
| The situation in NYC seems sad. Shows you how crazy "seniority" rules are! |

Earlier this week I read a NY Times Magazine story about the state of school reform, focused on NY but also talking about the Race to the Top and reform efforts around the country (sorry, no longer have the link, but maybe it's been talked about on this board?).
I'm a dyed in the wool democrat. But I have never, ever supported teachers unions. I think that the unions once served a role, but once they moved into self protection at all costs, they broke trust with parents, children, and themselves, frankly. These rules are crazy, and like many Democrats, I say reform is long overdue. If the unions can't see that, if they cling with everything they've got to old, failing ways, they are truly done for. It makes me sad and angry to think of incompetent teachers remaining on the payrolls. |

I'm a DCPS parent, and I'd have to say that right now, Rhee is doing a fabulous job weeding out dedicated teachers and principals.
There was (and still is) some deadwood, but Rhee and her staff lack the skill and experience to figure this part out. They are working with the "over 40" rule. In other words, if you're over 40 you need to move along. Teacher's need unions desperately when you have "leaders" like Michelle Rhee. |
| Wow, what if every employer utilized the over 40 rule. |
| That's age discrimination. It's illegal. |
