| Do you mind sharing what they are or were, how many years of HS, especially the ‘unique’ ones that referenced so much on this thread. And would you call it rigorous list, not rigorous or something in between? |
| My child has gone deep into one activity, so it won't be a long list, but she has lots of leadership, awards, and demonstrated commitment to this activity (probably averaging 15 hours a week), plus related internships. The activity is related to her academic goals. No idea how colleges will view this but she's not aiming for super competitive schools anyway. |

This is my daughter’s list. She is a lot more motivated than I am!
Fall/Spring sports all 4 years, plus winter training Volunteers 2x month doing food distribution Foster kittens (lots of time involved in this) Member of a county wide board Social media manager for one club President of Model UN Secretary for another club Tutoring through English Honor Society Member of a few other clubs Works part time Volunteers for student government projects at school Member of a district wide advisory committee. |
I should add that all he clubs were 4 years except during COVID. |
|
Primary school EC is band - marching and symphonic, plus private lessons. She does a couple other school clubs but very low level of commitment.
Out of school she did training as a "master naturalist" and now regularly volunteers with the organization. Mainly invasive plant removal/habitat restoration but occasionally other projects. Others in the org are mainly people 40+ so I guess it's an unusual EC for a teen. Summers she works at a camp focused on environmental education. |
This is quite a full plate! Just curious-- were there other things that your DD wanted to do but didn't? |
My DD looked into that but it said you had to be 18. Did your DC request an exemption or did they not have any age issue? |
She wanted to start a club of her own based on something our family is involved with, but (not surprisingly) never got around to it. She likes being busy. If she’s at home doing nothing she complains. I really don’t know where it comes from since her dad and I are not super motivated people outside work. I should add that some of these things are not a big time commitment. Also I do the food distribution volunteering with her (it’s one of the few things I am motivated to do!) |
Wow! My DC will have a much smaller list. The main activity demands 16-20 hours a week year round. There just isn’t enough time with school in the way. :p |
| My DD does an individual sport that is intense and time consuming. As a result, she has no time for clubs and after school activities. She has several volunteer stints with different organizations. |
I had to go along on field trips as a chaperone during the training. She did the classes online because they were not doing them in person but if they'd been in person I would have had to attend with her. Now for volunteering, I just sign a waiver that she brings along, never been an issue. |
Thanks! |

My youngest has
2 sports (one small time committment, one bigger) 1 part time job (4 hours per week) summer job 2 school clubs (one with leadership role) one interesting hobby My one already had college had similar time committments but really more pointed and is going to school for pointed interest. Neither won any type of national awards or anything but are well rounded. |
I think colleges looking at a list like pp’s will tend to assume her commitment to most of the activities was fairly minimal, maybe an hour or two a month at most. |
|
My DD had what I would call strong extracurriculars but nothing national or very unique.
4 season sports for years, including travel sports, HS varsity captain, etc. FT job in summer for several years, increasing responsibility over years volunteering and later paid work Clubs at school Personal business enterprise for years A few awards, etc. ECs offset B+ academics and ADHD. I think the application showed she was a hard worker, creative and a leader. Was accepted to all colleges, but didn’t apply to T50+. |
