Department of transportation

Does anyone work there? What is the atmosphere like, in terms of general satisfaction, work life balance, and sense of making a positive difference? Current telework policy? I'm thinking of making a switch from my agency based on a non-law skill set and wondering if I should look into jobs there. Thanks!

Just apply and see if you get picked. Meanwhile google and learn things such as, DoT is pretty highly ranked for job satisfaction.

Telework probably varies but I think its 2 days per pay period for the most part. some positions can be remote

Also, may want to learn a bit about DoT components and do a bit of research to learn what questions you really want to ask.

I’ve worked in a few DOT modes (bureaus) and would recommend applying. Like any agency, employee satisfaction depends on the specific office. DOT is generally supported by both political parties and insulated from politics to a degree, except for transit. Plus they are awash in funds right now from the new infrastructure law. Return to office policies likely vary by mode but I’ve heard some former colleagues are now fully remote and others are back in the office two days per pay period.

Who isn’t? Seriously, I’ve worked at 4 agencies and never heard of any QSIs. Only WIGIs.

DOT is an awesome agency to work for. Great mandate and mission, and super chill.

OP here. Same. No loss there.

Agree with PPs that it's overall a good place to work. Note that FAA is essentially an unrelated entity that does not talk to the rest of DOT as far as I can tell. Most people I know at main DOT seem happy.

NP, how would you compare DOT to HHS (specifically NIH)? I'm admin and looking to make a switch as well. I know NIH is highly regarded and I enjoy my coworkers but I'm looking for a non-supervisory 14 position and have found them in non-HHS agencies.

I think DOT wins out over HHS and NIH specifically. Good culture, good leadership, and a lot of interesting $$ and projects lately.

HHS is literally the most drama-filled agency I’ve ever worked for. Staffdivs to opdivs there’s SO MUCH DRAMA

Agree that the above is true (I'm in a related field and people move over all the time) but I don't like the Navy Yard location, it's an awkward commute from the burbs.
