| Still no CoGAT? pool, lottery like magnet middle school? |
| Dear God, please no lottery. It discriminates against the top students, who have the highest stats, definitely need a magnet for their intellectual development and social peer needs, yet can find themselves miserable in a regular school, doing regular APs. |
| There was no CoGAT this year for the high school students applying. There is an application and they used grades, MAP scores, essay questions, etc. It was not a lottery. I wold imagine they will do it the same as they did last year. But they haven't announced it yet. |
It's a lottery. Sorry for Larla. |
No, it isn't a lottery. |
They say it’s not a lottery …but it’s really kind of a lottery. Sorry to burst your bubble. |
Hmm...the kind of lottery that isn't really a lottery? |
Yeah, keep telling yourself that buddy! |
You sound bitter about where your child ended up. PP is correct; it was not a lottery. |
| It's not a lottery like the CES and middle schools. Not sure why anyone would say that. The competitive high school magnets never moved to true lotteries. It makes less and less sense as kids get older (I don't think it makes sense for any grade, really). |
The HS program has never used a lottery. They used a limited lottery for MS and CES. There is no CogAT for 2022-2023 since they are completing their pilot that came about because of the pandemic. I imagine next year after analyzing their findings they'll decide whether the CogAT is really needed, but high-stakes testing like the SAT are out of favor because they may create more issues than they solve. |
| Just curious - which one has more seats - CES, MS Magnet or HS magnet? |
Many magnet high-school programs like VAC at Einstein, Global Ecology at Poolesville, or Biomedical at Wheaton. There are also enough CES seats to cover maybe the top 3%. There are roughly seven regional centers and four local centers, each with 1 or 2 classes typically of 28 students. I think there are only 400-500 MS magnet seats. I'm guessing since there are 2 STEM programs and two Humanities programs with roughly 100 to1 125 students, but I don't know the exact specifics. |
^ 100-125 students per grade |
What's certain is that the middle school magnets have way fewer seats for the student population than the CES and high school magnets. |
