2.5 or about 29 months too late for early potty training?

So I hear 20 to 30 months is the best if you want to potty train before 3. (I know a lot of people like doing it after 3 but we need her potty trained before 3 for preschool) right now dd is 25 months and showing some interest in the general concept of potty, underwear, etc. however, I was thinking of doing it at 29 months bc I’m tired and lazy, and I hate potty training. We have a big trip when she will be around 28 months so I thought I’d push it off till after then, but I wonder if doing it closer to 2.5 is harder, I don’t want to miss a good window. She’s pretty verbal and communicative now, but potty training feels like jumping off a big cliff…

Her brother potty trained at about 26 months and it went more or less fine, just temporarily gross. Ack boy potty training seems so much easier…

Should we bite the bullet now, or take the risk that she will be even more stubborn in 4 months? She’s kind of stubborn already but very sweet and occasionally eager to please. Very much in a “do myself!” phase.

Btw for a funny read on potty training and the myth of the magical window, read jessi klein’s new book on parenting, hilarious.

I’d do it now. The I do it myself!!! phase is perfect for this. I trained my older at 25 months and took her on a big trip at 28 months and she did great — I put her in pull-ups for the car ride but otherwise she was in undies. She had one accident I think? Due to all the excitement of everything but that was it.

Do it now! We waited for that independence streak and it was so great. We ended up taking a big driving trip just after she was day trained. It was harder and we stopped more as she refused a pullup. But she was so good and only had once accident the entire week trip! We ended up emergency peeing in many off bathrooms and side of the road (travel potty for the win) but it was ok.

She sounds very ready. I would do it now.

As long as she recognizes when she’s wet and can pull her pants up and down independently then go for it. I’d probably make sure she can put underwear on herself too before starting. You want her to be as independent as possible when accidents happen so she can learn to help with clean up. This will help tremendously when you start to night time train. Make a clean up routine-same order each time, and stick with it. You can start as early as you want to there’s no set time as long as prerequisites are there.

With potty training one of the most news is taking advantage of a good window of opportunity in terms of your kid’s willingness and temperament. So, I’d just do it, and get it over with. And I also hate PT but am glad I did it earlyish for mine

We did it at exactly 29 months and she trained in two days. I dreaded it but it was surprisingly good outcome. For us and her it was a perfect age to PT.

is she showing any of the readiness signs?

Go for it!

I trained at 28 month old. I felt like I could have done it sooner but I waited for a long weekend when we would be home and didn’t have anything else going on. It took 2 days for her to actually pee in toilet but once she did she continued doing so.

We did it at 27 mo with my son and he did comply, but he had a lot of tantrums when asked to go. I’m glad we didn’t wait because 2.5 to 3 has been a challenging age with lots of boundary testing, although he seems to be getting past the worst of it now that he’s almost 3. So, I guess try now would be my suggestion…

OP said she is interested in the potty and undies. It's a good time to try.
