Why do so many people open their car door on busy streets?

Anonymous
I live in Alexandria, and constantly see people throwing their door wide open, or leaving their passenger car door open (or driver, on one way streets) while they look for something. How are so many people so stupid and clueless? Do they not realize how totally dangerous is? And if someone hits you or your door, it's not their fault. It's yours. Opening your car door without fully making sure it's completely clear, is illegal in VA.

What are they supposed to do? Never park on a busy street? Crawl through a window?

Uh, how about sit in their car and wait until it's clear to exit? And then do so, quickly?

Because they are incredibly selfish. Period.

You obviously need to look out to not hit a biker but I don’t understand, streets are generally designed to have room for a car door to open and have traffic go by. I live and park on a busy street in DC, if I waited for traffic to completely clear I would never be able to get out of my car.

Shout out to the twin mom/daughter couple in Tysons yesterday whose mom deliberately cut in front of me and took her time entering her Tesla. Gave us great hilarity all the way home - "hon, nice car what is that - a Ferrari or one of those extremely "rare" Teslas?" BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA

Take longer next time, dear.

Then you wait for an opportunity open it partially, slither your body out and around to the sidewalk in a matter of seconds.

Opening your car door fully wide, while you take your sweet time? No, most streets in Old Town are not designed to accommodate that. And if someone hits your body your door, you're going to be the one at fault -- not the driver on the road.

Why do we ask, "Why do people do this selfish and stupid thing? Why do people do THAT selfish and stupid thing?"

Are you new to Earth? Many people are dumb. Many are selfish. Many are both.

Accept and move on.

They were rude.

But what exactly was the source of "great hilarity"?

Maybe they looked and acted in a manner that led one to laugh out loud.
