Why does Arlington county allow electric scooters and bikes on bike paths?

Anonymous
I do not get it.

Hover boards are ok, but if you put a go cart kit on it no.
Electric scooters and bikes that go 35mph are ok.
Electric skateboard ok.

I am seriously thinking of cruising on Arlington bike paths on a motorcycle at 40mph.

At least you can hear it.

The electronic bikes and scooters belong on the street - we have enough lance Armstrong wannabes riding obnoxious enough and do not need ones who cannot even pedal going as fast or faster. I am so annoyed.

End.

Disagree. For safety, they should be allowed on bike paths.

Disagree, but think anyone endangering others by riding recklessly, dangerously fast, or being obnoxious on populated bike trails is an a$$hat. I don’t care if you have a battery assist or not.

A Wakefield student was just in a horrible accident while riding a scooter home from work. He was struck by a car and is not expected to live.

Safety of who? The joggers and dog walkers on the paths?

I do not see what the difference is in a 100lb ebike at 35mpg with a 150lb rider
Vs an 80cc mini-Bike on a trail with same rider.

Same kinetic energy it they hit you. So why not let small motorcycles on the same trails?

I don’t get it either OP. The paths clearly indicate no motorized vehicles. Those things have motors. And I have no empathy for the lance armstrong types on the paths. The Tour de Farce cyclists — who blow past everyone practically running over grannies and toddlers, and run through crosswalks along the W&OD eg, in Oakton and Herndon —deserve every scratch, bump and broken bone they get. God help anyone who rides a horse on the paths. (I think they’ve been driven off in the past 10-15 years).

I’ve been using this for years, so happy to see it again. Maybe I got it from you?

That should read “used to clearly indicate ….” Not sure when it changed. IMHO though the eebike riders so far are not nearly the jerks of the spandex cyclist brigade.

I probably saw it here at some point.

All bikes, electric or manual, should go on bike paths and stay off the roads. I hate entitled bikers on the road.

Arl. Co. Board makes bad decisions all the time. All. The. Time.

+1 They suck.

I would be okay with the scooters if the stop speed was slower. But they're heavy, not easy to control, and typically ridden by amateurs. Not safe and really irritating.

Well, the thing is, bikers are entitled to use the roads, just like cars.

Most of the so-called bike paths, like the W&OD are not dedicated just to bikes though the Lycra brigade would like to kick off anyone going under 20MPH.

Bikers are entitled to use the roads. So sorry if that delays you by a couple of minutes now and then.
