| I'm going to call them Tuesday, but has anyone dealt with a "penalty" charge on a new car? We bought it from a local dealer in the spring. I don't understand why the car tax bill showing a 10% penalty charge. Is this a sign the dealer messed up the paperwork or something? |
| Following. Same thing here on a car I bought in the Spring. |

Did you register your car with Fairfax County Tax Administration within 60 days of buying it? There is a late fee if you didn’t.

| I didn’t even get a bill for the car I bought in the sprint, although the shows up on their website as belonging to me so clearly they know about it. |
This - you need to register your car with Fairfax County. This is not something the dealer will do for you. You must do it yourself. While you are at it, if you sell your car, do the same so you stop the clock on how much tax you owe on a car you no longer own. |
That's so fricking annoying. It's basically a bonus 10% to the county on new cars, because I am sure most people who are not originally from here would know to do that. |
| Here is one of the few things that Virginia really does a terrible job of compared to Maryland. Personally I would rather pay the 6 percent sales tax once and not a frigging personal property tax yearly. |
