Homework in lower grades...

Are you pro or against it? We are at a local private who does not start homework until 2nd grade. However, my neighbor said at her DCs DCPS, they get homework every night in 1st grade. Just wanted to see what people's thoughts were.....

Lower school has had disappointing academics and work habits.

I think some homework is good to get the kids into the habit of it.

Against. In fifth grade I think it’s a must.

I have one in DCPS still and had two in 1st. We had no daily homework. We were told read with your kid 20-30 min a day and some weeks we got a math packet that took my kid one afternoon to finish. Public or private, we practice reading spelling and math at home. 4th and 3rd graders

15 mins a night of reading aloud or math facts or spelling homework did wonders for our children. And we saw what they were expected to know or if any issues were popping up with those subjects.

Once in awhile a project or group work project popped up in lower school, with some individual homework.

My kids had homework in first grade but it could be completed in 5-10 minutes.
