Our rental company notified us that we got a speeding ticket in France - and that we would receive the ticket in the mail (from the French municipality). Rental company just passed along the message (and charged us $40 admin fee for "handling - grrr).
And, we received the ticket today - my French is minimal (!!) but appears we apparently were going 79 Km in a 70 Km limit (9 km over - come on!). Pay the ticket or blow it off? Obvious inclination is toss the ticket in the circular file. But not sure if this could come back to haunt us down the road. Anyone have experience with this/wisdom to share? TIA! |
| I wouldn’t have opened it and written return to sender on the envelope. |

Do you ever intend to return to France? Rent a car in the EU?
Just pay the ticket. |
| I would pay it |
| Of course you need to pay it if you’d ever like to go to France again without worrying. |
You can't tell me the computer systems are linked up like that - no way! |
| I would pay it. We got a ticket in Italy several years ago and they hounded us. We had to send the money through our bank and we still get creditor notices periodically about it. Seems like they take them pretty seriously so I don’t know why you wouldn’t pay it if you ever plan to go back to the EU. |

French person here. If you drive there again, they might still have you on file... I would just pay it. It's a simple gesture of courtesy, and being a good role model for your children. |
Yep. Been around for at least 5 years. Countries share this information. I know at least France, Spain, and Italy do. |
Same situation for us when we rented a car in Italy. The were relentless about collection. We received more than one ticket and did successfully dispute them, but in the end paid about 120 euros. |
| Yes, pay it. It’s the right thing to do. |
Me again. If you have a question about your ticket, feel free to ask. I can translate for you. |
Why is this even a question? We would expect a foreign visitor here to pay tickets, right? You violated a law. Take the punishment. Don't make the rest of us suffer more for being disreputable Americans. |
You’re pissed at the rental company for charging a fee, and you’re pissed at the French police for making 9km over the speed limit a ticketable offense, when the only person you should actually be pissed at here is yourself. You messed up. Own it and pay the ticket. |
| If you don't pay, your rental car contact will pay it for you and charge you a huge fee plus late fees. |
