| Isn’t that unusual in August? |
| They're usually around in July and August in Chevy Chase |
| Not particularly, why? |
| OP. I thought they were good by the end of July. |
| That’s awesome. Lucky you!!! |
| I'm still seeing them all over. But now that you mention it, I don't know when they disappear. I watch for their first appearance like a 5 year old every year, but don't notice when they fade out. |
| A few come out late and are not going to find a partner. |
| I saw one here last night too. They’re definitely out later this year, it’s not normal. |
| It recently occurred to me that I feel like I haven’t seen one in a couple years. |
Mosquito spraying kills them. A lot of people visit my yard and are like "I haven't seen one of these since I was a kid!" and they live 3 blocks from me. They should have the same backyard fauna. It bums me out. Stop killing everything! |
| I also saw one last night and thought it was late in the year. I was happy to have seen one. |
|
I grew up in this area and also refer to them as lightening bugs. Firefly sounds so much prettier. My kids say firefly but I still instinctually say lightening bug.
Where are you from, OP? |
NP. I’m from Florida. I use both terms. Not sure which even feels more natural. |
Oh right - our next door neighbors spray for mosquitoes— which we never had a problem with even before they started spraying. |
I say both as well. From Loudoun. |
