accuracy of step / mileage trackers

Anonymous
I've been using my iPhone to track steps and distance. When I compare my route to Google maps walking directions, the phone is always coming up short. For example, today I walked for >30 minutes. My phone said I walked .77 miles. I entered the exact route on Google maps and it gave me 1.2 miles.

Which do I trust? Is there a better tool for tracking? Is Apple Watch better for this?

I find my watch significantly more accurate than my phone.

There are apps for this you can try. Strava and Nike run club for example. I go to google maps afterwards and try to calculate my distance on it to see what’s most accurate.
