Summer Reading Assignment - Whitman

Anonymous
Whitman parents or teachers - will summer reading assignments (required writing about them) be collected tomorrow or do the teachers allow a few more days? We are having a debate in my family.

Another Whitman parent here and my kid told me he only had to read the book not write anything. Hmm …

My kids have never done summer assignments until the first week of school, and it has never been a problem. Summer is for fun, not school!

HS teacher here. Any type of summer assignment that is actually going to be entered as a grade in the gradebook has to allow enough time that if a newly enrolled student was assigned it on Day 1, they can complete it and turn it in on time. However, the teacher may collect it first day and that’s a first impression of the student.

For my AP Physics classes, the summer homework is usually a math skills review that I go over in the first few days. Then there is a graded quiz on day 5. Students that did the homework don’t feel rushed. Students that are strong in math don’t feel rushed. Students weak in math get the signal that the course is fast paced and either realized they need to step it up or that the course is not what they want. HS teachers in other subjects have shared similar philosophies with me.

On the website, under the reading assignment details, it says "Be prepared to submit the assignment in the first week of school."

My kid is expecting it to be submitted or at least be checked that it has been done. It's just a starting point anyway, it's not like they had to construct and essay.

I’m the OP. Kid is in 10th. They do have a complete assignment to do. They’ve made a good start so I think it’s a compromise. They can at least indicate they did something and perhaps ask questions about it to demonstrate interest/conscientiousness.

yes but it's not like a full essay, it's still like prep for what they may use as a basis for an essay during the first few weeks.

Whitman parent of a junior - as I recall, the summer reading assignment is usually due at the end of the first week or early the second. I always make my kids do it before school starts (I am old fashioned that way ) but seems they always have a few days to turn it in...
