help me take the plunge to short hair

Anonymous
I am bored with my look. I have fine hair in a short bob, my hair is dark blonde/light brown, have some 4 month old highlights in it. I have had variations on this hairstyle for several years now. I am thinking off chopping it all off and going pretty short but I am worried that while short hair suited me in my twenties, at 38 it might make me look like I have given up. What is the key to looking chic with short hair rather than frumpy?

Get some magazines with looks that you don't find frumpy, and that you could see on yourself, show it to your stylist, discuss, relax and enjoy!

Short can definitely be chic! However, I think a short cut that looks too "coiffed" looks matronly.

I have gone short for the summer. I was tired of the D.C. bob. My hairdresser has made it very textured and "piecey." I like it 'cause it is easy to take care of, and my friends think it looks modern. I'm in my early 40s.

I went super short - after having long hair for years, and semi-short hair that always looked like crap (put a hat on and take it off and poof - crazy hair).

Pick out several pictures of haircuts you like - several. Then take them to a hairstylist and ask which would work best with your hair. You don't want a style that is going to fight your hair type.

I like my short hair, but I have found that I spend more time on make-up and always wear earrings now to make sure I don't look too boyish. I also found that it made me want to buy more clothes. My clothes tend to be more basic, conservative type clothes. With a short cut, some things that used to look cute, now look more masculine. So I find myself always keeping an eye out for sales for more feminine cuts and colors. I did not take that expense into acount.

So overall, I think I look better with short hair than semi-short hair, because it actually has made me pay MORE attention to what I look like. And love the fact my hair is never in my eyes.

My biggest problem with short hair is that my hair is thick and becomes poofy easily. I think shorter styles are easier with thinner hair (although this could be one of those the grass is always greener things)

Evert time I've cut my hair short, I've always regretted it (basically for the reasons PP mentioned, I looked boyish unless I had on make up and dressed up). The plus is that it always grows back. You won't know how you'll feel about it until you take the plunge and if you hate it, it won't be forever.

I have curly hair, and got a short pixie. I LOVE it! I've gotten SO many compliments! It makes me look younger, it's stylish, and absolutely carefree. No more worries about DC humidity. Seriously, throw on some cute earrings a touch of lipstick, and it's so chic (at least, that's what I've been told).

You might try The Hair Styler website. For a small fee you can upload a picture of yourself and try many different hairstyles on your own face to get a sense of how you'd look with each. Then you can print the picture and a description of the cut and take it to your stylist.

I had the same experience as 13:52. I now have a short curly 'do, and get so many compliments. I have been told I look 10 years younger. Go for it, OP. If you hate it, it will always grow back.

I love short hair, but with the shape of my face I really need to be thin to pull it off. I would give anything to cut my hair short again! I say go for it!
