ED question

DC is applying to me school ED1 and another school ED 2.

DC says they cannot even apply/get their application in to the ED 2 school until after hearing from the ED 1 school on Dec 15. Is that right, or is DC confused? I just figured you apply to everything you want as early as possible, just checking the box for ED 2!

Your DC could certainly wait until Ed1 decision. But if she doesn’t get in, it will be a mad dash to get all other ED2 and RD applications in by January. If that’s how they want to handle it, it’s their call. It could pay off if they get into ED1 though! Personally my DC got everything in early, and then it was just the waiting game as decisions were released.

It is generally best to get ALL of the applications in place before hearing from the ED1. Nothing worse than handling the process when you are bummed about the early results.

You cannot ED two schools at the same time (since an ED applicant promises to go to a school if admitted). However, you can submit a first ED application to a first school, submit a second, non-ED application to a second school, and switch that second application from regular admissions to ED2 after hearing back from the first school.

Your son is right. You cannot apply ED2 until you hear back from ED1 bc it is a binding contract if he gets into that school. You can apply to other schools via EA if you would like, but that’s about all you can do until Dec. 15. The other posters saying to apply early for everything have no idea how it works. We just went through this song and dance last year and asked similar questions.

Yeah youre the one and only who knows how it works. They can’t do ED2 but they CAN apply freely EA, Rolling and RD absolutely everywhere else, at the very least have these ready to go including the ED2 application.

Agree. This is right. You can never have more than one binding (ED) application out there at once. That is the point of ED - you are saying you are committing to this one school, if accepted. Depending on the school, you can usually have non-binding Early Action (EA) applications out there at the same time as one ED, but there are exceptions. You need to research carefully the rules for each school. For instance, Yale, Notre Dame and others have plans with particular features - read carefully bc they have rules in terms of on what basis you may or may not apply to other schools. If you are declined or deferred from an ED 1 school, they release the binding commitment, so you are free to apply ED2 if you wish, elsewhere - but only after you are released from that binder. Advice to have many options ready to go is great too. Because after receiving referral/denial from ED1 in December, it's a lot of work to quickly get other applications done in time. Especially if the student is experiencing disappointment. And the number of supplemental essays to quickly write is hard. Best to write a bunch in the Fall if possible, and have lots of flexibility in mind. Good luck!

Verify that your ED 2 is due January 1. Notifications for ED1 will be in December. You can certainly have the ED2 app ready to go if needed.

You can even have the ED2 application already submitted as RD or EA. Then like PP above says, switch that application from RD to ED2. That’s easy to do.

We didn’t go that route because we didn’t want to spend the application fee if kid got into ED1. So we just had them all finalized in Common App and were planning to submit one of those in the holding pen as ED2. The exception was UVA, where kid applied EA because there’s supposedly an admissions bump for EA over RD, but kid was not considering ED there.
