| Do travel Softball teams take new kids for spring? My DD (age 12) is regretting not trying out for travel softball in July when it seems all the tryout were held. Do teams ever do tryouts again leading up to spring season, or do we need to wait a whole year? |
| some will have tryouts in Dec/January when some kids drop off after fall season. i suggest you join a couple facebook groups like Original Va Travel Softball or PlaySoftball.net. |
Some will need players, yes. And believe it or not not all teams are full. I still see some teams looking to fill one or two slots, especially at the 12U level. Where are you? I can name a few I have seen. Another strategy is to approach a team you are interested in and try to join as a practice player. Then you are on the radar and will get the reps if a vacancy comes up. Most teams will do this and take you on for a reduced fee. |
| Va Crushers in PWC is looking for an 09/10 pitcher or catcher. |
How good is your kid? |

My experience is with club baseball but from what I hear softball is not particularly different in this way:
I’d definitely join local softball FB page (opportunities will often be posted as they come up). I’ve even seen parents inquire “any teams still looking for a 12u player for fall?” and getting bites. Spots often open up as teams shift around. Also, a player can sometimes be added onto a smaller roster if they are the right fit or if they ask at the right time. Definitely touch base with any other softball parents you personally know, and get the word out that DD is looking for a team. If there are clubs she is interested in, it doesn’t hurt at all to email/message, explain she missed tryouts but is looking for a team and would be interested in trying out if any spots open up. My club baseball son ended up without a team late this summer after all tryouts had concluded (his team from last year blew up- nothing to do with son/us). We did all of the above and ended up finding him a team (ended up quickly getting him a tryout/offer with a team that happened to have a kid leave last minute). Also got 2 calls for a tryout in the upcoming weeks from other teams in same situation (and declined of course). |
| OP here. Thanks all. We’re in Arlington. In terms of how good she is, compared to travel players we’ve seen play in our Rec league, she’s middle of the road. |

Many clubs are still looking for their last player. But you have to be proactive and reaching out. Since clubs have the flexibility how many players they carry, they don’t always post tryouts for that final spot.
On the Maryland Facebook travel softball page, there are still teams posting openings. But you may also have to accept that you will have to travel further than your local travel club. |
| OP, did you find a team for your daughter? |
