Math 8 vs Algebra

My 7th grader was placed into Math 8. I’m wondering what the difference is between Math 8 and Algebra. I’m assuming that it’s not quite Algebra and that the Math 8 kids will take Alg the following year.

Yes, Math 7 and 8 are what other schools would call Pre-Algebra.
